COVID-19 Closure Update
Lyndel R Whittle
Wednesday, March 18, 2020

As announced on March 16, 2020, the Iberia R-V School District is temporarily closed through March 31, 2020. At this time, we plan to be back in session on April 1, 2020. As more information is made available from health and governmental agencies in the coming days, the school board and district administration will reevaluate our return to school during the Regular Board Meeting on March 26, 2020. If it is determined that an extension to our current closure is necessary, such an announcement will be made following that meeting. Please regularly check for messages from school regarding our plans during the closure and our return to school.

Even if we are not officially in session, we still plan to make every effort to ensure our students are still being served educationally. We also want to ensure that food is available for those who request it. The following notes should provide more clarity regarding our plan during this closure:

Education Notes

  • Educational activities will continue for our students during the closure. Instruction will continue through a combination of online/virtual activities and hard-copy activities or packets.
  • Even if we are not in session, we are still expected to provide our students opportunities to learn. When we return, we want our students prepared to move forward in the curriculum. We consider this work to be very essential.
  • We realize these options are not a substitute for face-to-face instruction. But we will strive to offer students continuity of learning to prepare them for our return to school.

Online/Virtual Learning

  • Students who may be taking part in online activities should have brought their Chromebook home. Please contact the appropriate building office if your student does not have his/her Chromebook.
  • Online activities will be assigned and instructions given by teachers using students’ school email addresses. Many teachers are making use of Google Classroom to share activities.
  • Teachers are available by email if there are any questions.
  • If there are technical problems, please contact Tech Director, Stacy Spurgeon, at stacys@iberia.k12.mo.us.

Hard-Copy/Paper Instructions

  • For students who do not have regular access to the internet, hard-copy/paper activities or packets will be provided. Teacher instructions will be included in the packet. Many of these packets have already been handed out for the first week or more of the closure. We plan to mail weekly packets out to students on Thursdays, beginning March 19, 2020.
  • The completed packets may be returned to the school at dropboxes located at the main entry of each building (elementary and high school), mailed to school, or given to staff members who are providing meal delivery services. Please contact the appropriate building office if other methods are needed.
  • Teachers are available by email if there are any questions.

Meal Delivery

  • The District is offering free meal/food delivery to those students who request it.
  • The deliveries are only made within the district and only to Iberia R-V students.
  • Meal delivery can be requested by contacting either building office (573-793-6818) or by completing the form at https://forms.gle/zXCgyADEMDconJFH7.
  • Multiple days of food, mostly nonperishables, will be provided each delivery. The first delivery will occur on Thursday, March 19, 2020. Subsequent deliveries will occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The deliveries will begin at 10:30 a.m. and should end by 1:30 p.m. Given that we are still determining where to deliver and that these locations could change, we cannot provide a more specific delivery time for each location at this point.
  • Staff members providing the delivery service can also pick up packets that need to be returned to school.
  • As this service is still developing, it may be necessary to alter this plan in the future.

Activities/Athletics

  • All athletic, extracurricular, and cocurricular activities, including all practices and competitions, are cancelled during this closure.
  • Additionally, outside individuals and groups will not be given access to our facilities or grounds during this closure.

Assorted

  • At this time, we plan to return to school on April 1, 2020. This return date will be reevaluated at the regular meeting of the school board on March 26, 2020.
  • The guidance being provided by health agencies and all levels of government is continuously updating and changing. That guidance will be considered when determining when we’ll return to school.
  • At this point, we do expect offices to remain open, at least for the time being. Office hours have been temporarily changed to 9:00-3:00. All offices can be reached by phone at 573-793-6818. Please call if you have questions. As mentioned above, teachers will be available by email for instructional questions.
  • Per Governor Parson’s executive order, the April 7 school board election has been postponed until June 2, 2020.
  • The FEMA Building will still be available for use as a storm shelter.
  • Our planning at this point is still somewhat fluid - There could be changes. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work our way through this unprecedented time. This is new and uncharted territory.
  • Any changes will be announced using our normal outlets - website, app, Facebook, Twitter, and text.

We realize that closing our schools presents many hardships for our community. The staff at Iberia R-V has risen to the occasion in their efforts to help our students. Our ability to provide learning during this time will require a close partnership between the school and our parents/guardians. Thank you for your assistance in continuing the opportunities for your children to learn.
